At Kulkarni Medical Center, patient care involved multiple steps—from consultation to diagnostics and billing. However, these processes operated independently, making coordination across departments difficult and time-consuming.

Lab processing required 3–4 days to deliver results, affecting diagnosis timelines. Manual billing processes led to 40% revenue leakage, while paper-based documentation slowed the movement of information across departments.

There was no integration between consultation outcomes, diagnostic processes, and billing systems, leading to inconsistencies and repeated patient visits. Appointment scheduling inefficiencies contributed to overcrowding, and limited analytics reduced visibility into performance across specialties.

In addition, the absence of automated quality control in lab operations and compliance gaps added to operational complexity.

These conditions required a system capable of improving coordination, reducing delays, and enabling consistent processes across all functions.

Solution | Implementing Integrated Clinical and Billing Workflows on AWS

To bring consultation, diagnostics, and billing into a more coordinated flow, Kulkarni Medical Center worked with OneCare to implement an integrated system that connects these functions into a single operational framework.

The solution included deployment of a medical center system using AWS HealthLake and HealthScribe, supported by a microservices architecture built on ECS and AWS Lambda, with secure data storage using Amazon S3.

Patient registration and scheduling were digitized using AWS Amplify and Amazon Lex. Specialty-based electronic health record workflows were introduced to improve data access and consistency, along with telemedicine capabilities using Amazon Chime SDK.

Lab operations were automated using Amazon Textract and Lambda functions, along with AI-based document analysis and IoT-based monitoring for lab equipment. Real-time result delivery and alerting were implemented using dashboards and Amazon SNS.

Billing processes were integrated across consultation and lab services, enabling real-time insurance verification using AWS Lambda and automated claims processing using Amazon SQS. Financial dashboards were implemented using Amazon QuickSight.

Clinical decision support was enabled using Comprehend Medical and document analytics, supporting data-driven diagnosis and treatment planning.

Patient experience improvements included a unified journey across services, mobile access for appointments and results, automated notifications, and digital record accessibility.
